Barely Breaking Even began in 1993 when Peter Adarkwah and Ben Jolly were discussing music and discovered a shared interest in diverse, eclectic sounds covering all genres – from old scratchy Brazilian grooves, through 70s funk, via jazz fusion, hip-hop and soul to newer garage, disco and techno music.

Pete had been DJing at friends' parties for several years and had just graduated to his first gig on the club scene. First and foremost a music lover and collector Pete had discovered a previously unknown aptitude when he started spinning the tunes. They decided to promote a night where the music that was played would not be restricted as it was in other clubs – the new night would be across styles and freestyle.

Since early 2000, Pete has continued to develop the label, taking it to new heights. BBE models itself on the motto of 'real music for real people' – with now over 180 compilations and artist albums released, profiling a variety of sounds and styles from funk and soul to disco and Latin as well as house and hip hop and beyond.

Cheap, disposable, often with poor audio quality but with great visuals, flexi discs were vinyl’s poorer cousin in the pre-digital age.

Given away with magazines or sent out by advertisers, they were a splashy way of getting your message heard. Pressed onto laminated card or thin, wobbly plastic, these discs extolled the virtues of washing powders, beers, and banks. Specially commissioned tunes took as their unlikely subjects shoe shops, bakers, and even dentists.

This book brings together over 150 images of the most remarkable British flexi discs from the 1950s to the early 1990s, chronicling the varied and sometimes bizarre uses of these flimsy records, and the result is a fascinating archive of post-war design and advertising ingenuity.

Alex Rita and Errol (fka Andwot) are the leading lights behind Touching Bass: a movement of London-based soul disciples who hold down a bi-weekly NTS Radio residency, a discussion series called Speaking In Sound and a monthly dance (communicated via texting service) among other creative endeavours.

Over the last three years, the latter has become a playground for soulful music of all kinds. As residents, Alex and Errol (alongside the rest of the Touching Bass selectors), have cultivated a space for musical exploration where emphasis is firmly placed on dance and community above all. A space unbounded by genre and lead by feeling instead, with talented local selectors and heavyweights equally likely to grace the DJ booth.

The pair have been slowly taking this approach across London and international dancefloors, with a debut Australia/Japan tour in 2018 and appearances at the likes of Dimensions (2016/2017), Field Day (2018, opening for Erykah Badu) and Brainchild festivals. Plus multiple appearances at cultural institutions like the ICA, BFI (in support of the official Black Panther film premiere) and TATE Britain/Modern.

Tom's something of a Sunday evening specialist at Spiritland, with his all-encompassing selections earlier in the year hitting exactly the right note.

A DJ, record producer and beat-head with links to Lex and Keep Up! Records – plus a foot in the world of VJing – are solid reasons to come and round off the weekend in fine style with Tom.
