In Colin's words – "when you consider how fast the DJing world is moving these days, 50 years in the game is a ludicrous thing to contemplate".
Having lived, danced and DJed through the eras of Northern Soul, jazz-funk and house, few can claim to have contributed to UK dance music more than Colin Curtis.
Growing up in Stoke on Motown and Radio Caroline, Colin first started DJing in 1967 and became a figurehead for some of Northern England’s most iconic clubs, including the Blackpool Mecca, Rafters in Manchester and Nottingham’s Rock City.
His experiments with electro and house, alongside Hewan Clarke at The Playpen in Manchester also had a profound impact on the musical direction of the Haçienda. These days his career is viewed with similar superlatives as Mancuso, which we discuss in the below, alongside a look into his life as a record collector and the new jazz dance fusion compilation he’s curated for Z Records.

We are delighted to announce a unique night of forward thinking music with two the UK’s prime musical movers - James Lavelle supported by DJ Food on Friday 26th November.
For the past 30 years, James Lavelle has been at the forefront of global club culture. Known as much for his highly eclectic DJ sets as for his production work as UNKLE, Lavelle is one of the country’s prime tastemakers and musical curators - even hosting a memorable Meltdown right here at Southbank Centre, joining a very select list of musical luminaries such as David Bowie, Yoko Ono, Massive Attack, Nick Cave and John Peel amongst others.
He started his first night at just 15 in Oxford , Mo’Wax Please, took up a residency at The Fridge for Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud night, before starting their own night together, That’s How It Is, a legendary Monday night session at Bar Rumba.
He played clubs from The Blue Note and Plastic People to Ministry of Sound and a five year-long residency at Fabric
He’s played the world’s top nightclubs including amongst others, Zouk, Womb, Watergate, and Space and was one of the first DJs to play China.
He continues to produce albums under his UNKLE moniker, working with a myriad cast of musical collaborators including Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft, Brian Eno and Josh Homme. He has reworked tracks for artists as diverse as Beck and Can.
In 2016 Lavelle curated Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick, a blockbuster exhibition at London's Somerset House, that featured contributions from artists such as Anish Kapoor, Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk, Thomas Bangalter and more.
2018 saw the release of The Man from Mo’Wax, a critically acclaimed documentary film about his career, and in 2019 James, together with Punchdrunk creatives launched ‘Beyond The Road’, a ground-breaking immersive exhibition at London's Saatchi Gallery.
Support comes from the similarly prolific DJ Food (Ninja Tune) - one of the groundbreaking musical forces in UK music. With nearly 25 years of DJing experience, he’s been a key part of the Ninja Tunes stable and Coldcut's weekly radio show 'Solid Steel’ and is consistently at the forefront of DJing and VJing technology.
2001 was the first in a series of Solid Steel mix CDs, starting with DJ Food & DK (Darren Knott - Solid Steel's producer) and the publicly lauded 'Now, Listen'. Since then he's been constantly art directing the Ninja label, designing for artists like Amon Tobin, The Herbaliser, DJ Vadim and Funki Porcini. Mix work has included a re-score of the Monkees' cult film 'Head', an as-yet-unreleased album of vintage Sesame Street funk, and his magnum opus 'Raiding the 20th Century'. This last hour long mix / documentary was an internet only release, charting the history of the cut-up and featured journalist Paul Morley reading from his book 'Words & Music'.
Tickets to this unique double bill start at just £10 for the early birds, and are limited to only 250. Join us for this one-off night of beat-heavy musical travels on the Southbank.

Independent Label Market Afterparty With Far Out Recordings
27/11/2021 KC
- Eclectic
- Global
Josh Tautz from Far Out Recordings joins us at Spiritland King's Cross for a joyous Friday night after the Independent Label Market in Coal Drops Yard.
Far Out Recordings was founded in 1994 by London DJ and record producer Joe Davis. His longstanding and insatiable passion for Brazilian music, fuelled by his initial love of the jazz, funk and soul ubiquitous on the Rare Groove scene in 1980s London, took him to Brazil first as a teenager. It was there that his enthusiasm for record-collecting led him to some of his musical heroes and the eventual formation of musical bonds and close friendships. Joe’s early discoveries led to him becoming the UK’s foremost authority on Brazilian music, much of it little-known here before his enthusiastic endorsements began to ring out across the music scene. This led to the inevitable, and the keen young music fan and DJ with an entrepreneurial flair founded Far Out Recordings.
The label’s aim from the start has been to bring the sound of Brazil to the world – to showcase the history and culture of a land bursting with creativity and energy – from the classic to the cutting edge. There have been numerous releases from both new and established Brazilian artists including legends such as Azymuth, Joyce, Marcos Valle, Arthur Verocai, The Ipanemas, Sabrina Malheiros, Clara Moreno and Binario, to name a few.
