Independent Label Market Afterparty with Far Out Recordings

Josh Tautz from Far Out Recordings joins us at Spiritland King's Cross for a joyous Friday night after the Independent Label Market in Coal Drops Yard.

Far Out Recordings was founded in 1994 by London DJ and record producer Joe Davis. His longstanding and insatiable passion for Brazilian music, fuelled by his initial love of the jazz, funk and soul ubiquitous on the Rare Groove scene in 1980s London, took him to Brazil first as a teenager. It was there that his enthusiasm for record-collecting led him to some of his musical heroes and the eventual formation of musical bonds and close friendships. Joe’s early discoveries led to him becoming the UK’s foremost authority on Brazilian music, much of it little-known here before his enthusiastic endorsements began to ring out across the music scene. This led to the inevitable, and the keen young music fan and DJ with an entrepreneurial flair founded Far Out Recordings.

The label’s aim from the start has been to bring the sound of Brazil to the world – to showcase the history and culture of a land bursting with creativity and energy – from the classic to the cutting edge. There have been numerous releases from both new and established Brazilian artists including legends such as Azymuth, Joyce, Marcos Valle, Arthur Verocai, The Ipanemas, Sabrina Malheiros, Clara Moreno and Binario, to name a few.

Hemai

21/07/2021 KC

  • Eclectic
  • Jazz/Funk/Soul

Hotly tipped 22-year-old producer and multi-instrumentalist Louie Hemus AKA Hemai sonically melds soul and jazz with an electronic tinge. Born and bred in the UK’s second capital Birmingham, Hemai grew up around jazz culture, music and live musicians, taking influence from the likes of Herbie Hancock, The Gilberto’s and D’Angelo to modern day acts like Zero7 and Corinne Bailey Rae.

His upcoming debut album - Strange Beauty (May 7th, Tru Thoughts) - is collection of stories of the love, spirit and balance of the universe. On the LP, Hemai experiments with the idea of movement and the present, bringing together some of his favourite sounds from around the world and melding them with his UK roots.

The first few singles of the album have seen Hemai garner support from the likes of Lauren Laverne (BBC 6Music), Jack Saunders (BBC Radio 1), Jamz Supernova (BBC 1Xtra), Tony Minvielle and China Moses (Jazz FM), Papaoul (Worldwide FM), EARMILK, Stereofox and Clash Magazine as he cements his place in the thriving UK jazz and electronic scene.

A reflection of himself and his loved ones, ‘Strange Beauty’ is a testament to the thoughtfulness and meticulous nature of Hemai’s production and dedication to the music he makes. Receiving upfront support from Gilles Peterson on his debut 2019 EP “Eyes Closed” was closely followed by Hemai’s official remix of Oscar Jerome’s “Gravitate” and being titled one to watch by BBC Introducing’s Jaguar on her Hot List 2020.
