Palm Skin Productions
02/06/2022 KC
- Eclectic
Now based in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, but originally from London, Palm Skin Productions AKA versatile musician, producer and DJ Simon Richmond has spent the past 30 years or so as the epiphany of a modern professional musician. His debut releases as Palm Skin Productions were on James Lavelle’s seminal Mo’ Wax label which would lead to a fruitful relationship with the imprint, releasing 4 EPs that channelled early 1990s era trip-hop and beat-led electronica. Adding to an extensive catalogue of singles, 12” and other releases on a wide range of labels, notable highlights include a Palm Skin Production’s debut album on Virgin / Hut Records and a sophomore on Howie B’s eclectic Pussyfoot imprint. A session percussionist for the band K-Creative, signed to Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label (before being sacked to free up the budget for a lighting rig), Simon became a resident at Peterson’s ‘That’s How It Is’ club night. This change of events catalysed the Mo’ Wax era of Palm Skin Productions leading to a collaboration with ‘Straight No Chaser’ magazine.
Simon has collaborated, performed and produced for many UK and international musicians, including The Art of Noise, DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, REM, Pulp, Depeche Mode, Jackie Oates, and most notably Neneh Cherry and Jonny Dollar. Performing everywhere (DJ and live) from Fabric to WOMAD Sri Lanka, Festival Hall to Jamm, Ministry of Sound to Sub Club, Skolbeats Brazil to BBC Folk Awards, Simon Richmond has amassed an impressive list of tastemaker support for his Palm Skin Productions project including Gilles Peterson, James Lavelle, Patrick Forge, Nemone, Ross Allen, Norman Jay, the Guardian and Mary Anne Hobbs – to name a few.
Simon Richmond is part of the live electronic improvisational band The Bays, performing several John Peel sessions and headlining festival slots at The Big Chill and Glastonbury’s Dance Tent. The Bays have had concerts recorded by BBC Radio Three, collaborated with Herbie Hancock and toured with ambient musician Richard Barbieri.

Perry Louis

- Jazz/Funk/Soul
It’s impossible to pigeonhole Perry Louis and understand where he gets his inspiration. Perry did not come through the usual Collector to DJing route, instead starting his career as a Boogie/Jazz Dancer. He first took to the Dance floors of the most iconic clubs in the UK in the early to mid ‘70s, which fired up his passion and excitement for the music and was inspired by the iconic djs and dancers of that era which he tries to represent and influences his DJ sets today – all on Vinyl, of course. Perry has worked as a JazzFunk, Funk and Jazz Dancer and has a Vinyl collection that mirrors his style of dancing. As a DJ, he specialises in spinning JazzFunk, Pure Funk, Boogie and Dancefloor Jazz mixing in Latin, Brazilian Soul, Afro and Fusion and more.
Unlike the hundreds of dedicated Jazz, Funk and Soul Dancers who simply enjoy turning up to do their thing on the floor and hearing good music, Perry’s love and passion for the Music has had him digging for Vinyl all over the world to find that elusive track to add to the sound he works very hard at Improving – The sound of London’s underground Dancefloor Jazz, Funk and Boogie scene. Throughout his 30 year career as a Dancer, he’s picked up records everywhere he’s travelled to in the world. Perry’s friends know that to go somewhere with Perry means he makes a bee-line to that record shop to sort out that elusive Gem..

They Hate Change

Join us for a DJ set from intrepid and groundbreaking Tampa rap duo They Hate Change at Spiritland Royal Festival hall.
Dre (he/him) and Vonne (they/them) first came together in front of the apartment complex where they both lived as teens.
It was clear from the start that the two listen to music differently from most people—they’re sonic omnivores, obsessive deep-divers, lovers of rare and radical sounds. Starting as kids trawling the internet for tracks, they’ve been collecting music from around the world and across the decades, amassing a shared sonic knowledge so deep that “encyclopedic” barely begins to cover it—not just the East Coast hip-hop that Dre grew up on, or the hyperlocal bass-music variants like jook and crank but also drum ‘n’ bass, Chicago footwork, post-punk, prog, grime, krautrock, emo, and basically any genre on the map.
Entry is free, vibes are good.

Brighton’s Tech Support is destined for big things.
The mild-mannered DJ and producer, known as Ned Dickinson to his friends, already finds himself caught up amongst some of the most talented artists and selectors of the moment, and deservingly so.
At just 21, there are a stack of EPs on labels from the UK to the U.S. bearing Tech Support’s name. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find equally impressive work under long forgotten aliases.
On top of his 12” releases found in the likes of Juno and Piccadilly Records, Tech Support’s digital presence sees him racking up over 100,000 views on esteemed Youtube dance channel Houseum, alongside the likes of Folamour, Baltra, and Lone. His soundcloud reaches listeners in four different continents.
One morning in 2018, having already received considerable DJ support from the likes of Black Loops, Laurence Guy, and Late Nite Tuff Guy, Ned opened his laptop to discover a video his track ‘Friends, played by Dan Shake at Lost Village festival,’ blowing up the Identification of Music Group on Facebook.

25 years on, he remains one of the island’s most recognised musical figures, maintaining his residency at Sa Trinxa and returning playing venues such as Space on a regular basis.

Will Fox
23/06/2022 KC

- Jazz/Funk/Soul
As a longstanding staff member of Soul Brother Records, it should come as no surprise that Will Fox has had an unfettered access to a continued stream of Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rare-Groove, Two Step and Disco for as long as he can remember.
The shop has become a pivotal factor in his musical education and influence, a musical trove in which he continues to unearth dusty rarities from its vaults. Will has been reissuing music on vinyl for a number of years, working closely with Ralph Tee of Expansion Records where he brought to life the 2017 reissue of Keep The Fire Burning by Gwen McCrae, alongside Bobbi Humphrey’s Baby Don’t You Know, The Warriors’ What’s My Destination and the Soul Brother Records reissue of Chet Ivey’s Deep-Funk classic A Dose Of Soul.
As a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, percussion), arranger, producer and compiler, Will tends to err towards the soulful spectrum of music, particularly angling towards Jazz and its various permutations, but is unafraid to blend the hyper-melodic textures of Jazz with the deeper and more rhythmically truncated sounds of electronic music, drawing upon previous experiences of having studied in Berlin and Bristol. Will’s most recent compilation album—released with Dave Lee (FKA Joey Negro) on Z Records called Breaking the Beats—speaks to this musical ethos, a personal compilation of West London Broken Beat, straddling the gap gap between electronic music and Jazz.
Currently, Will is working on a solo project with Cinematic Orchestra Lead Vocalist Heidi Vogel with a distinct Latin feel, an area of music that he feels comfortable experimenting with and a particular wellspring of musical influence for him—from the polyrhythms of Cuban and Nuyorican Salsa to the frenetic Jazz-Dance of Brazilian Samba. He is also working on a new reissue project with Motherlode Music, a fledgling label reissuing rare and often unissued Soul and Jazz.
