Foreign Flavours: The Power Of Food. Hosted by Anna Sulan Masing

02/02/2026 KC

  • Supper Club

A supperclub salon! A two course meal, with conversations and readings from amazing authors and writers around the power of food.

Food is often a key part of diasporic identities. Recipes, ingredients and flavour memories are able to travel, shared and experimented with. But recreating dishes in new spaces can be tricky with different ingredients and equipment. These new spaces can create complex relationships with nostalgia, memory and home. Food also works as a way to create belonging and connectivity, and can be a useful way to look at difficult topics from the history of colonialism, labour and power dynamics between the global north and south.

Over a meal created and cooked by renowned chef Budgie Montoya, Anna Sulan Masing will be hosting conversations with Budgie about his work and writing on Filipino food, poet and novelist Stephanie Sy-Quia on how she weaves food into her narratives, and one other non-fiction author (TBC).

This event is the final chapter in a series Anna Sulan has been hosting over the last 12 months at Spiritland that delved into the topics from her debut book Chinese And Any Other Asian. The book ends on a chapter about food, therefore it felt appropriate to finish this Salon series with a focus on food and a meal.

Stephanie Sy-Quia's Amnion won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection, and a Somerset Maugham Award. It was longlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize, the Laurel Prize and the Royal Society of Literature’s Ondaatje Prize. Her writing has appeared in the Financial Times, The Guardian, The Boston Review, The White Review, Five Dials and Granta, among others. She is a keen gardener and linocut printer, as well as a fourth generation printer.

Budgie Montoya is a Filipino-born, London-based chef and the founder of Sarap and Alpas. His cooking is shaped by memory, migration, and identity, drawing from his journey growing up in Australia, working in Western kitchens, and reconnecting with his roots through food. Known for bold, soulful flavours and a deep love for storytelling, Budgie brings a fresh, personal take on Filipino cuisine to the table.

Chris started DJing in the late 90s, compiling first mixtapes on dodgy CD players and recording them straight to cassette. As an eager teen, he received his first bit of advice from Gareth Hansome of the Big Beat Boutique: learn to mix.

A mixer with no cue, forced Chris to focus on selection and progression—an approach that still underpins his sets today. He eventually went traditional, investing in turntables and properly learning the craft.

He is currently a resident and host of the open decks night Hot Mix 5 at All My Friends, hosts a show on Netil Radio, and runs sporadic events and stalls at festivals and record fairs as Mash 101.3. He also puts on parties with Orbital Sounds, and releases everything but music—mainly food-based merch—through his label Emergency Use Only.

Chris has played alongside and supported artists including Bonobo, Jocelyn Brown, Maribou State, Mafalda, Apiento, Emma-Jean Thackray, and Alexander Nut, and at venues and festivals such as The Jazz Café, Village Underground, Spiritland, The Cause, Brilliant Corners, Oval Space, The Social, and Secret Garden Party.

LAZY sees music as a catalyst for emotion. Proud of her multicultural identity, she skillfully juggles between house and other electronic music genres, leveraging her hyper-sensitivity to tell immersive and spontaneous stories.

A tireless digger, she injects a clever blend of groove and emotion into her sets with two specific goals: to release negative energy and get people dancing. With powerful bass lines, strange melodies or vocals, and sometimes nostalgic sounds, she offers progressive and rhythmic ballads.

Always seeking to connect with others, she doesn't limit herself to her DJing. With her best friend 100H, she also launched the SUPER KEBAB RECORDS label, offering DJ sets in unusual venues and a first tech house EP in preparation for release this winter.

A true enthusiast, in addition to being at the origin of the EDENA festival in the southwest of France with a very personal artistic direction imbued with poetry, techno and more, she is also host on DIA! RADIO with her show PLANÈTE EDENA where she suggest and invites artists for exclusive mixtapes.
