Tom Blip runs the vibrant Blip Discs imprint which has steered a consistently impressive path through bass music, house and traditional African sounds since its inception in 2015. His latest release was voted amongst the top 50 Fact Mag singles of the year in 2019 and the young producer has plenty more hotly tipped releases cooking for 2020. His remix for ‘Heyyeh’ by Penya (due out January via On The Corner) has already been exciting dance floors and track ID groups alike with plenty more originals on the way for the latter half of the year. As a DJ, his sets are often just as far reaching and unpredictable as his label which should keep absolutely any music head on their toes.

Roberta is a long time heavy music head originally from Bari, Puglia living in London for 30 years.

Adopting herself to the Talking Loud events at Dingwalls, and then later Bar Rumba's ‘That’s How It Is’ and the Straight No Chaser magazine family she soon became a well connected link between Italy and the 90’s underground London scene and all its trends.

As a Straight No Chaser scribbler, correspondent for Acid Jazz magazine and RadioItaliaNetwork, Roberta went on living her dream in London for being the place where music has always been happening and the club scene has always been strong in terms of legacies.

This to mention the later merging of another extremely important music fam into Roberta’s life as a digger as this one came via professor-friend-dancer-writer Tim Lawrence (thank you Tim! for introducing her to David Mancuso (RIP) and the Lucky Cloud Sound System and for inviting her to join the party set-up volunteers group).

In recent years, together with organising unique multimedia Arts crossover events-parties for selected clients/festivals in Italy, the ultimate leitmotif of her search has been reaching out to people to open up for new directions hence the never forgotten purpose of wanting to be a radio broadcaster-music selector that plays music with a message hence her new acclaimed name as a dj-selector as Roberta ReachOut.

Currently on air monthly on Totally Wired Radio (ReachOut Sound Emporium), it’s an incredible joy watching her spinning (Bookclub, The Seveney, The Horse & Groom): being such a natural happy dancer with complete devotion to music, spinning has just become second nature to Roberta as for the first time she has the challenge to be playing a long set which means there will be #moremusic as she always reminds, old friends Norman Jay MBE or Gilles Peterson, at the end of an email.

Detroit. Community. Love.

For the last 12 years, the way that Detroit-based DJ Pontchartrain has approached music, is centered around two things - learning and sharing. The result has been an interesting change up from the status quo of what comes out of the motor city. What started off as a project for edits and DJ tools has turned into a rediscovery of the roots of dance music. This shift in the last few years has pushed him into the new opportunities with some of the greatest labels in disco and house realm, and interesting achievements across the globe.

After joining up as A&R for the prolific label Whiskey Disco and its house subsidiary Lovedancing, his scouting of new talent has widened his musical scope even more, and his DJ style and productions have continued to advance. In addition to curating these two outlets, in the past few years alone he has released on well over a dozen labels, including Kolour LTD, Rocksteady Disco, Delusions of Grandeur, Toy-Tonics, Soul-Clap Records, Masterworks Music, Razor-N-Tape and many more. Output has been nothing short of consistent, hitting #1 chart positions on established outlets such as Juno, several times, in multiple genres.

When it comes to performances, Pontchartrain believes in the overarching goal of community. From the time he brought the Detroit Children’s Choir on stage with him at Movement Festival to sing along, to the bold invocations of poetry and messages of love, the dancefloor is a place for everyone to come as they are, and enjoy the people they are with, centered around the ancient idea of the communal dance.

Like many of the great Detroit artists he looks up to, there’s a humble blue collar aspect to his background as well. Pontch still works as a social worker directly with drug addicts getting back on their feet right here in the motor city. He volunteers with groups such as Give A Beat, LRNG, Girls Rock Detroit, local public libraries, and is now a volunteer and teacher at Spin Inc music production school. Music is truly a way of life, part of the greater idea of lifting each other up. His actions, sounds, and personality encompass this idea.

In Colin's words – "when you consider how fast the DJing world is moving these days, 50 years in the game is a ludicrous thing to contemplate".

Having lived, danced and DJed through the eras of Northern Soul, jazz-funk and house, few can claim to have contributed to UK dance music more than Colin Curtis.

Growing up in Stoke on Motown and Radio Caroline, Colin first started DJing in 1967 and became a figurehead for some of Northern England’s most iconic clubs, including the Blackpool Mecca, Rafters in Manchester and Nottingham’s Rock City.

His experiments with electro and house, alongside Hewan Clarke at The Playpen in Manchester also had a profound impact on the musical direction of the Haçienda. These days his career is viewed with similar superlatives as Mancuso, which we discuss in the below, alongside a look into his life as a record collector and the new jazz dance fusion compilation he’s curated for Z Records.
